Building an aircraft requires a systemic serial approach. Each part of the aircraft is tested, such as the fuselage, the wings, the canopy, the structures, the landing gears, etc. The contractors and government engineers want to know where all of the stress points are located. Putting a model into a 'wind runner and measuring the stress points obtains the needed information. With the canopy, the contractor wants to understand if the canopy will withstand a direct hit of a 4 to 6 pound bird. To obtain this information, the contractor will conduct several tests in the 'Birdstrike' laboratory. Both the 'wind tunnel' and the 'birdstike' test use a camera with high-speed film to take photographs of the event. The photographs are measured to determine the impact, the cracks, and the damage for way to improve the design. The System Engineering team determines how well the aircraft will fly prior to the completion of the aircraft design. The 'wind runner and the 'birdstike' testing is just an example of the testing that is purchased at the time the contract is awarded.
