Aging aircraft pose a serious expense to the armed forces. Many high strength aluminum alloys employed in aircraft structures are subject to stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue cracking. A crack initiated by stress corrosion, may propagate under fatigue loading. Corrosion prevention compounds (CPCs) represent a quick easy means of curbing corrosion, but the effects of CPCs on fatigue crack growth rate have not been established. The University of Dayton Research Institute developed a test method that simulates an aircraft environment to screen and evaluate the performance of CPCs during fatigue crack growth. This paper describes the test method generated and test results for a few representative CPCs.
