Because of the relatively unknown nature of the hazardous material, the processing of hazardous or "special" waste represents a considerable risk of environmental damage. It is, therefore, desirable to transport these materials in closed pipelines, for which purpose hydraulically-driven piston pumps have been specially developed. This article sets out the properties affecting the pumpability of the material, including for example, grain size, consistency, abrasives and aggressiveness. The second part of the article shows how the detail designs of pump components have been developed to suit the characteristics of the material. This relates to the geometry of the pump, the nature of the sealing systems and the materials used in pump construction. In the third part, the article describes the current state of the technology and introduces practical experience gained from specific applications.
