The United States Trade Development Agency (USTDA) contracted with the Shaw Group (Shaw) to assist Slovnaft, a.s. (Slovnaft) with the waste characterization, thermal treatment system conceptual design, and economic assessment for their Bratislava, Slovakia refinery and petrochemical complex. The project included the evaluation of the three most recent years of actual waste generation data with key waste streams sampled and analyzed, and a complete thermal treatment system capital and operating cost estimate and business plan. Shaw evaluated various options for the handling and disposal of the Slovnaft wastes to bring the facility into compliance with the European Union (EU) environmental standards. Analytical data from the sampling and analysis program combined with historical data for similar wastes from other refinery and petrochemical companies were used to establish an elemental composition and heating value for each waste stream. This data were then used to calculate the overall average composition and heating value for each waste category (solid, liquid, aqueous, and sludge). The task concluded with an evaluation of various thermal treatment technologies for the incinerable wastes and a recommendation for the most economical means to thermally treat the wastes.
