The gasification of biomass and municipal solid wastes for energy and hydrogen gas production gas has potential for addressing several areas of concern relating to waste disposal and reduction of harmful emissions. It is in this context that the European Commission 6 th Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration: SUSTDEV, is executed. The paper describes the main characteristics of a new cycle, named HighTempBiomass, which could produce both gas rich in hydrogen and energy (electrical or mechanical) from biomass with zero emissions and very high efficiency. Contrary to the conventional gasification, highly preheated air and steam (above 1300 °C) will be used as a gasifying agent. Preheating of air and steam will be realized by means of the ceramic high-cycle regenerator developed in this project. Also, a novel and innovative hybrid adsorption microscopic membranes based on clinoptilolite material will be adopted for purifying biogas and hydrogen separation. Acquired knowledge will be implemented in a construction of a pilot plant, which will be the end-user of hydrogen rich gas or energy produced during postulated gasification process. The reference plant is described in enclosed figure. It is composed with six sub-systems: the main gasification unit, ceramic high-cycle regenerator, steam recovery boiler, gas clean-up unit, hydrogen adsorption membranes and power generation station. The project schedules both experimental and theoretical activities directed to study and optimise two different research configuration for biomass gasification. The first unit is based on a batch type, counter-current and up draft fixed bed gasifier, while the second unit's configuration is based on a the auxiliary slagging gasifier to produce syngas from waste materials - pellets, plastics, tire shredder residues, etc.
