The invention relates to the combination of a coal gasifier, a steam power plant and a hydrogen engine for energy production from coal or, by upstream hydrothermal carbonization, from any biomass, with optional methanol production. A well-known process for the production of energy from coal is a conventional steam power plant. The presented process extends a steam power plant with a coal gasifier and a hydrogen engine. The former heats the boiler of the steam power plant, the resulting gasification products are oxidized via a water gas shift reaction with water to mainly hydrogen, which is oxidized in the hydrogen engine and drives another power generator. The heated exhaust of this process is used to preheat the feedwater of the steam power plant. Furthermore, the combined power plant can also be operated by means of upstream hydrothermal carbonization with any biomass. Overall, this increases the overall efficiency relative to the amount of starting coal compared to a conventional steam power plant.
