This paper will cover the key parameters in the design and operation of thermal oxidation systems. The design parameters are primarily for the incineration of liquid and gaseous hazardous wastes ranging from hydrocarbons to halogenated hydrocarbons containing aqueous wastes. Key areas considered are: - Waste characteristics; - Thermal classification - Chemical classification - Design parameters: - Temperature - Time - Turbulence - Excess air. - Burner type. - Incineration efficiency. The paper will then consider case studies of Thermal treatment technologies for the destruction of the following wastes:- - Chlorinated hydrocarbons, with energy and by-product recovery. - Fluorinated hydrocarbons, with by-product recovery. - Brominated & Iodinated waste, with by-product recovery. - Waste from Insecticide and Herbicide production plant. The studies will cover the system configuration complete with the downstream air pollution control system used for either by-product recovery or treatment to ensure that the final emissions and effluent are within the legislative requirements.
