A new process was proposed to control sulfur emission in an economical way by co-gasification of high-sulfur coal with coal-bed methane. In the process major sulfur in the coal will be released into evolved gas with higher hydrogen content produced from co-gasification. The produced clean gas, and lower sulfur char will be used as fuel for a power supply. A series of fundamental investigations have been carried out in a lab-scale fluidized bed gasifier. The preliminary test results showed a promising process to utilize high sulfur coal. The newly developed pre-desulfurization process of co-gasification could achieve benefits from cheap coal-bed methane to ensure a hydrogen-rich environment in a gasifier and promote the sulfur release from anthracite coal. Sulfur release rate was greater than that of the obtained from lower temperature oxidation and the partial gasification method under the same carbon conversion rate. In this paper, the thermal dynamic analysis on possible chemical reactions occurring in the process will also be presented.
