Assessment of an Innovative Zinc/Air Battery Tray That Provides High Mileage for Electric Vehicles

Batteries based on the Zinc/Air technology provide an impressive energy density up to 200 Wh/kg, which is a very good value compared to other battery types. A transporter (1500 kg) supplied with Zinc/Air batteries (500 kg) will obtain an operating range of more than 300 km (assuming an specific traction energy of 0.125 Wh/kg km and an efficiency of the drive train of 80 %). Difficulties in the battery handling and the lack of an integrated battery management have limited the application of this technology until today. Within a German EV project (EFRB) an innovative system has been developed and realized to meet the demands of EVs with high mileage. In this contribution the development of a mechanical construction for the battery tray is presented, which can be individually adapted for certain vehicle applications. To provide a modular concept of electrical energy storage a distributed battery management system is introduced, which is based on RISC microcontrollers.
