California Airports' Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

Air quality concerns and regulations are encouraging the use of electric ground support equipment (GSE) at urban airports across the United States. A quiet revolution has gained a foothold on the air-side of airports wherein GSE plays a vital role in the day-to-day operations. In California, the South Coast region has unique air quality problems that require more stringent emissions control. The electrification of GSE is part of a program to reduce pollution and emissions at airports. The adoption of the South Coast Air Quality Management's Memorandum of Understanding is the most recent measure to reduce emissions. The electrification of GSE and the utility's role in this process, along with the MOU will be discussed in this paper. Figures 1 and 2 represent a beltloader and a baggage tractor.
