The use of Raman amplifiers in core optical networks significantly increases optical system reach and eliminates costly OEO regenerators. As the Raman amplifiers represent an additional cost to the upfront network, careful economic analysis is required to identify the carrier ROI and payback period. Due to the wide spread of span lengths, and hence losses, Raman amps need only be used on those spans characterized by high loss. Monte-Carlo analysis has been used to show the sensitivity of upfront Raman investment to saved regenerator cash flows during channel deployments. Raman deployed on 15% spans showed a payback after 7 wavelengths deployed with total network savings up to 8.5%. Raman on 50% spans gave a payback after 14 wavelengths and offered total network savings up to 12%. Raman on 100% spans showed a negligible reach improvement over Raman on 50% spans and showed the inherent inefficiency of a "Raman everywhere" design approach.
