To maximize the efficiency of distributed Raman amplification, to predict system performance in a Raman assisted optical transmission line more precisely, and, ultimately, to save on cost in both system design and deployment, it is critical to characterize the fiber plant that is going to serve as the Raman amplification medium and to condition and optimize it appropriately. The system performance impact of lumped losses caused by fiber connectors, splices and bends to Raman efficiency has been explained in this paper, based on a simple and yet practical mathematical model. The significance of such impact lies in the fact that lumped loss attenuates both the signal power and the Raman pump power and therefore causes greater signal loss as compared to that by the same amount of distributed fiber loss. To help equipment vendors and carriers to work together to avoid such impact, the authors have tried to summarize important engineering guidelines for network planning, design and deployment.
