EVOLVING OPTICAL ETHERNET SERVICES NETWORK ARCHITECTURE

Today, service providers are offering Optical Ethernet VPNs and Private Lines over different network architectures, and require that these can evolve in a smooth, simple fashion. Each type of services architecture presents unique challenges to the service provider. In switched metro Ethernet network architectures, challenges are addressed with features like VLANs, Q-in-Q, and Service Provider Ethernet Switching. RPR networks can be evolved in a smooth fashion by deploying service planes and implementing a bridged RPR design. SONET networks can offer wide scale Optical Ethernet services most effectively using GFP and VCAT, and network-related costs can be reduced through a focus on switching points and hub selection. A focus on evolving services architecture in a smooth fashion removes the barriers to mainstream Optical Ethernet services deployment.
