Sustainable Mining Development in the Northern Territory, Australia

Mining substantially contributes to the well being and development of the people of the Northern Territory, Australia and contributes about 17% of the total Gross Territory Product. At the Northern Territory Department of Business, Industry and Resource Development it is recognized that ore bodies are eventually depleted. The idea of sustainable mining development is implemented through encouraging the mining industry to self-regulate, the control and mitigation of environmental impacts, the integration of development and mine closure, and by promotion of continuous improvement in health and safety. For the Department, mine development sustainability means that all mining activities, from exploration through mining to mine closure, are conducted in a manner that is environmentally, socially and economically acceptable. The broad vision and objectives are focused on effective protection of the environment, social progress that recognizes the needs of all stakeholders, and prudent use of mineral resources. Inevitably, this means striking a sustained balance between these three elements.
