Metal working process and the associated skill modelling in UML ― a case study of grinding troubleshooting

The skill has an important role at the metal working shops. This paper discusses a skill model diagrammatically represented and implemented as database and programs. The model is based on the information collected from the metal working cases. UML is introduced as definition and communication tool. In the model, all the information concerned is represented by class diagrams. The skill is identified as a set of relations among the objects, represented by collaboration diagrams. The model has functionality of multiple representations reflecting to the differences in situation and community. As a case study, grinding trouble is selected and the practical applicability of the model is examined.
