FE simulation of birdstrike against structures representative of the leading edge of a commuter aircraft has been investigated using the commercial code PAM-CRASH [1]. The present work forms part of the European Union research Programme “CRAHVI” undertaken at the University of Limerick, Ireland. The skin of these structures is made from a metal/composite hybrid material (Glare). The bird model uses an SPH scheme. A mesh has been created based on the supplied geometry and used for simulation of the birdstrike against the commuter leading edge. This paper describes the finite element modelling of the LE structure and results of pre-test simulations of forthcoming bird strike tests.
