In service, structures are subjected to different loads which involve varying rates of strain. Even for monolithic materials, stiffness and many other properties are usually very dependent on strain rates. The situation is even more significant for viscoelastic and composite materials, thus dictating a good understanding of this phenomenon for effective design procedures. This paper reports on an investigation of rate of strain experiments on a neat form of a glass-based composite and two variants of it that are augmented with nanometer-sized silicon carbide and titanium dioxide respectively. Both the strain rate magnitudes and the nano-phasing are seen to be important to the response. There are probably two basic areas to the strain rate testing of materials - effects on the properties of the material, and the strain parameters. This paper is primarily focused on the effects on some of the material properties.
