The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is a newspaper company with a wide variety of communication and information needs. Creating an Intranet has helped increase communication to Sun-Sentinel personnel and has provided a centralized location for posting information and tools relevant to employees. But because the company is so spread out and Intranet development involves diverse teams in many different divisions, it has been a challenge to manage and maintain web standards to ensure overall site consistency. This presentation will demonstrate how the Sun-Sentinel has met this challenge by: 1. Constructing a workable model and philosophy for development. 2. Obtaining buy-in from all parties involved. 3. Providing a mechanism to deal with different interpretations of the model, change, and expansion. The first step is to write a document to set standards and create a solid model for web development that all people working on the Intranet will agree to adapt. The model used at the South Florida Sun-Sentinelis based heavily on teams. An explanation of these teams, their roles and how they interact will help generate ideas for how different teams can be structured at other organizations. The second step in ensuring that an Intranet site will conform to company-wide standards is to obtain buy-in from all interested parties. Examples of whom these parties are and how to obtain their buy-in will be examined. Finally, even the best-laid plan needs a method to adapt to change, to plan for expansion and to settlediscrepancies in interpretation. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel's implementation philosophy and mechanisms for dealing with change will be outlined and discussed. ing this approach to Intranet development has allowed the Sun-Sentinel to develop a site that is consistent and easy to use even though the company is very diverse and many people from different divisions are taking place in the development efforts.
