Single walled carbon nanotubes produced by gas-phase decomposition of CO (HiPco process) were treated with nitric acid to generate carboxylic functions which were exploited for three different coupling approaches to functionalize the tubes with an amine to form an amide. Thin films of the reaction products were characterized with infrared spectroscopy.
