A Simple Numerical Approach of Micro Wave Rotor Gasdynamic Design

Wave Rotor is a kind of supercharger, which compresses air by applying unsteady shock wave motion in its internal passages. It is indispensable to estimate the propagation velocity of pressure waves in the design of wave rotors. Therefore, a simple numerical model, which can precisely simulate the pressure waves at low CPU cost, will be very helpful. Here, efforts were made for providing such a numerical simulation model to take into account three fluid dynamic factors that are supposed to be dominant in the wave rotor performance. After verifying this model by comparing with 2D numerical results, overall simulations were performed and discussed upon a wave rotor designed by NASA. Finally, a wave rotor for much smaller gas turbines of kW size has been designed and numerically checked by applying the present simulation model.
