This paper presents experimental and computational investigations on a centrifugal compressor stage to study unsteady interaction flow between the impeller and its vaned diffuser and to verify the capability of CFD codes. Detailed instantaneous flow has been measured and analyzed for several different measuring positions using a hot wire anemometer with Phase-Locked Ensemble Averaged technique. Also, two numerical computations have been carried out: one is steady method with the deterministic stress model and the other is unsteady method with the sliding interface approach. Comparing with the experimental data, it has showed that both computations are in generally good agreement with the experimental data on the measuring plane 1. But a large deviation has been found between computation and experiment on the measuring plane 2 and 3, and further study has been planed on the test rig to explore the unsteady interaction mechanisms.
