This paper presents an overview of the flight test results in a program to develop a new standards and criteria for GPS Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) terminal instrument procedures. The results presented here are being obtained in an ongoing test program at the University of Oklahoma and the FAA Technical Center, Atlantic City. The tests are for the evaluation of precision CAT I LAAS approaches and guided missed approaches using a LAAS/GPS navigation systems in category A, B, and C aircraft. The Category A and B tests are being conducted at the University of Oklahoma, while the Category C results are being conducted at FAATC, Atlantic City. This paper will present the University of Oklahoma preliminary results of the straight segment precision LAAS approach and guided missed approaches in the Cat A and B aircraft as well as the FAATC Cat C test results. The paper will present the results of the isoprobability contours based on the data to date. The paper will discuss the LAAS Navigational System Error (NSE), the Flight Technical Error (FTE) associated with hand flying the system and, the Total System Error (TSE). The paper will also present the normalized comparison of the LAAS results to WAAS and the standard ILS criteria. In addition, the paper will present the initial pilot reactions to the procedures and the use of the GPS/LAAS system.
