FIELDBUS SYSTEMS FOR THE POWER INDUSTRY

It would be improper to begin a look into the future of power industry control system architecture without first taking a brief glance backward at how it all began and the major incremental steps along the way. Then it would be good to ask, "Just exactly what is Foundation Fieldbus", why should it be considered for instrument control loops in any power plant, fossil or nuclear, and what are its strengths and weaknesses and how to use both to best advantage. Briefly this paper looks at how to install a system, whether redundancy or surge protection is required-and for which loops and the practicality of interfaces to communicate with the major power industry PLC/DCS systems.
