We have described a progression of direct detection Doppler lidar instruments beginning with the single edge aerosol lidar, followed by aerosol and molecular double edge lidar systems. These systems have been operated from laboratory and mobile ground based platforms and the newest direct detection wind lidar, the TWiLiTE molecular Doppler lidar, is designed for autonomous operation on the NASA WB57 high altitude research aircraft.
