Since 1998 optical data links based on polymer optical fiber became a story of success in the field of automotive applications. Standardized data links like D2B or MOST are currently used by car manufacturers worldwide. The publication describes the main characteristics of these links and gives an overview of the reliability requirements for POF in automotive applications. Especially the extreme automotive climatic environment is brought to focus. Furthermore test results are reported on the initial attenuation spectrum, the bending loss at different radii and temperatures, and the attenuation behavior at high temperature and humidity. Five commercially available POF with different material and structural properties were tested with regard to a reliable operation at typical and extreme automotive environment.
