In this paper, we demonstrate a new technique for manufacturing high performance graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI-POF) by continuous extrusion, at much lower cost than current GI-POF production methods. As we show here, this process can produce GI-POF with attenuation below 25 dB/km at 850 nm, and bandwidth in excess of 400 MHz-km. Also, we discuss recent activity in the creation of international standards for perfluorinated GI-POF. We believe that these technical and standardization advances will greatly increase the attractiveness of perfluorinated GI-POF in the datacom markets.
