In this paper, the applicability of multi-slice longwall system for mining of 20-30 m extra thick coal seams under weak geological condition in Mae Moh coal field in Thailand was discussed by means of numerical analyses. Numerical modeling was performed by using the three dimensional finite difference code "FLAC3D". The ground behavior and failure characteristics as well as stability of slice-face structures in each slice of multi slice longwall section were evaluated. According to the results obtained from the numerical simulation, it was found large ground displacement around the longwall and excessive failures at the floor coal seam during the extraction of top slice (the most upper one).
