Environmental Problems Caused By Istanbul Subway Excavation and Suggestions for Solution

Today many of the environmental problems caused by subway excavations have inevitably become a part of city life. These problems can be categorized as: transportation stocking of excavated material, traffic jam, noise and vibration, dust and mud formation and cut-offs in supplies. Although all these problems pose difficulties on their own way, the most important one for a big city like Istanbul is no doubt excavation since the others- traffic jam, noise and vibration, dust and mud formation greatly depend on excavation. Moreover, these problems are environmentally more region-bound and restricted to the construction period. And they disappear when the construction is finished. In this study, the problems -- primarily the excavation problem- caused by subway excavation were dealt with and suggestions were offered.
