An effort to continue a sustainable development in post mining area Case study: Antam's nickel ore mining on Gebe Island, North Maluku Province, Indonesia

Antam's nickel ore mining activity on Gebe Island, a small island located at North Maluku, Eastern Indonesia ceased on November 2004 after being operational since 1979. The mining activity at Gebe has since brought significant change to local communities. The population of Gebe Island has increased from a mere 500 people pre-mining activity to 7,000. It has also turned the island from a small village into a mini town with its own public facilities and infrastructures such as transportation, communication, education, market, sport and religious facilities. The nickel ore mining at Gebe has also provided a significant contribution to the local government revenues in the form of taxes and royalties. Manage such issues, Antam has developed a comprehensive program called the Mine Closure and Post Nickel Mine Plan of Gebe. The program will not only include a thorough assessment of any environmental impact, but also a recommendation on how to manage such impacts. To ensure the effectiveness of the program, Antam conducts proactive dialogue with the stakeholders such as government officials (local and central government), sector institutions (department of fisheries and maritime affairs, etc.) and surrounding communities. One of the plan's highlight is how Antam plans to sustain the local economic development. In coordination with the local government and private institution, Antam plans to develop an economic activity based on renewable resources, focusing on fisheries and maritime industry.
