To predict the slope displacements induced from an earthquake load at Ulju, where the Yangsan fault exists, a new displacement equation that considers the earthquake characteristics of South Korea and the local geological characteristics of the study area is proposed. In the new equation, Newmark displacements were estimated by a double integration of the accelerations of real earthquakes which are smaller than the maximum ground acceleration of 0.13g, the maximum design ground acceleration of South Korea. The results from the new equation were compared with those of Ambraseys & Menu's empirical equation. The comparison showed that the Ambraseys & Menu method overestimated the slope displacements produced by seismic loads in regions of moderate seismicity, such as South Korea, by a factor of more than two.
