Stress-strain Relationship of Sand with Discontinuous Deformation Analysis

Discontinuous Deformation Analysis is used to analyze deformation of sand under plane strain condition. The micro mechanism of deformation properties of sand including elasto-plastisity, dilatancy, strain softening, hysteresis loop during unloading-reloading, volume contraction due to axial unloading, formation and development of shear band are explored by two-dimensional DDA simulation combined with theoretical analysis of the interaction between sand particles. Comparison of simulating results with test ones shows that DDA provides a powerful approach to understand the stress-strain behavior of sand by analyzing micro mechanism of movement of particles in the different phases of deformation.
