The shear strength on shear planes which develop during sliding is reduced to a residual value. The paper presents results of an investigation of the recovery of shear strength, with time, following development of the residual strength condition in highly plastic clay. The results of the investigation indicate that although strength recovery does occur, it appears to degrade rapidly following limited additional shear displacement The concept of recovered energy per unit area of sheared surface is introduced in order to quantify strength recovery. The extent of the recovery depends on soil mineralogy, clay content, plasticity, and moisture content.
