In retrospect: the 2006 Southern Leyte, Philippines landslide

On 17 February 2006, a large-scale rockslide-debris avalanche occurred in Southern Leyte, Philippines following days of heavy rainfall. Some 1,221 people died and the village of Guinsaugon was buried by the rockslide, considered to be one of the largest to have occurred in recent years. This paper summarizes the state of knowledge regarding the landslide based on recent published information, such as setting, trigger and impact and discusses the effects of this catastrophe to existing hazard management in the country.
