A practical approach for evaluating ventilation air duct performance in an existing road tunnel

This paper describes the approach used in a recent road tunnel project to characterize the air duct system resistance. The techniques used included empirical data and computer simulation using an airflow network model to assess the airflow distribution and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model the localized effects of the tunnel/duct inlets. This method of analysis was found to be significantly more cost-effective than attempting to rely solely on CFD modeling. The empirical and analytical results are compared with airflow and differential pressure data collected during full-scale testing at selected supply and exhaust air ducts. A comparison of the predicted and measured data indicates that the analysis approach produced results within about 5% to 6% of the field-measured data.
