Wind Loading of Flat Profile Fabric Roofs

This paper presents the results of a parametric wind tunnel study of flat profile fabric roofs in uniform flow. Specifically, the influence of wind velocity, fabric mass, pretension and porosity on the wind loading characteristics is determined. Two types of response configurations were observed in the experiments: a statically deformed response and a dynamic response involving fluctuations of the fabric shape. Details of the wind loading and structural response are described for each of these configurations and are compared to the results of a previous experimental study of fabric roofs. Wind-induced tensions for the dynamic response of porous flat profile fabric roofs are generally an order of magnitude smaller than for the static response of impervious fabric roofs.
