Equivalent linearization of stationary coefficients for spectral computations

One common way to predict response of slender structures to wind buffeting forces is to use a spectral computational approach. This requires to modelise stationary coefficients as linear functions of wind incidence. Usually, this linearization is made according to the engineer's own appreciation. We propose a numerical method which permits to automate this task and optimize the quality of the results. Basic principles of this method are exposed. Then an experimental validation, based on rigid models of viaducts in construction stage, is presented. Comparisons are made between experimental results, numerical results using the equivalent linearization and numerical results issued from a classical spectral approach. They show that equivalent linearization leads to quite better results. Even though, further investigations with better estimation of aerodynamic admittance functions have to be carried out.
