The Improvement of Search and Rescue Equipment - From Ships to pleasure boats

Rescue and life saving apparatus (SART, EPIRB etc.) to keep the rule of GMDSS are equipped on a ship. In an emergency, however, it is not easy to take out them, or sometime these apparatus do not fulfill the function by incorrect operation. The authors paid attention to SART and tried to improve it as a portable and personal tool. Two approaches are considered. One is the miniaturization of SART. Another one is the use of mobile phone and the existing services. Our experiments for the miniaturization of SART showed that circular polarization to be effective. In a circular polarization, the antenna can be made smaller and lighter than horizontal polarization. From another point of view, the author studied existing service for net mobile phones. It was shown that these services were effective to establish search and rescue system. Furthermore, new application was shown.
