A field-scale recurrent mass selection programme for wheat based on the male sterility gene; Ms3; and hydroponic culture of cut tillers is being established. It appears that the frequency of a desired allele in the recurrent population can be increased steadily through Fi selection (male and female plants); yet inbreeding (to the Fe) of the male parent before selection and use in crosses results in a very rapid shift in allele frequency. When the frequencies of a given number of target alleles have been raised to an adequate level; the single seed descent inbreeding steps will annually yield a useful number of diverse pure breeding lines containing all the target genes.
