The international crop information system: a useful tool for wheat breeding programs.

The International Crop Information System (ICIS) links information on genetic resources and germplasm improvement, providing mechanisms to relate pedigrees to phenotypic and genotypic data, including molecular, end-use functionality or agronomic traits and making this data easily accessible to all users. ICIS comprises a Genealogy Management System (GMS) and a Data Management System (DMS). The GMS handles pedigrees, selection histories, breeding locations and other descriptors. The DMS manages phenotypic and genotypic data related to lines in GMS. Both GMS and DMS comprise a central, public database and local, private databases. Software links the central database and local databases so that pedigrees trace from local information to ancestorsin the central, and evaluation data from public and private sources can be integrated. Local data is readily up-loaded to the central database at the discretion of the owners. GMS queries such as pedigree displays, germplasm tracking, and coefficientof parentage calculations are provided. Users can create DMS queries locally through a query-builder application. This makes ICIS a very flexible and useful tool for managing pedigrees, planning crosses and sharing information among researchers. We have adapted the system to our wheat breeding program and have entered pedigrees and associated trait data.
