Abiotic stresses, like drought, cold and salinity represent a severe limitation for productivity of durum wheat. The molecular bases of the stress tolerance has been largely investigated in particular in the model species Arahidopsis, where genes withkey roles in stress tolerance have been identified and located in different signal transduction pathways by means of mutants with altered phenotype in relation to stress response. Nevertheless a number of genomic loci involved in stress tolerance, and genes related to plant stress response have been identified also in crops. The analysis of their transcript and protein accumulation revealed a complex regulation in which different mechanisms contribute as a whole to the expression of the gene product.
