In the present study, site recordings of noise levels and their time varying patterns are carried in the high-rise residential areas of Hong Kong. The major aim of the study is to check whether it is possible to estimate the 24-hour average noise percentile levels using discrete but continuous hourly noise records. The results tend to suggest the logarithmic averaging works well for levels of small percentage exceeded, while the arithmetic averaging gives significantly better estimation for the large percentage ones. The resulted errors are negligible for the levels of 10% exceeded, but increase as this percentage gradually increases toward 90%.
