FEATURES OF ACOUSTICAL BARRIERS USED IN RUSSIA FOR TRANSPORT NOISE ATTENUATION

Noise walls, earth berms, cuttings and their combinations are used to provide highway noise reduction at surrounding residential areas in many countries. Concrete, bricks, acrylic or polycarbonate, metal, wood, and other types of materials may be applied for a certain acoustical barrier depending on climate features, environmental factors, country traditions and exploitation aspects. Noise absorbent steel modular panels and their combination with acrylic or polycarbonate panels are most widely used last years in Russia. Features of these barriers are analyzed in the paper. Theoretical and experimental studies of the barriers insertion loss are described. An analytical method for prediction of acoustical barrier efficiency is presented. Sound absorption of a barrier, its height and length as well as distances between the road, barrier and receiver are taken into account in the developed equation. Results of experimental study of recently mounted barriers done in accordance with ISO 10847 are discussed.
