Assessment of genetic similarity among wheat cultivars using RAPD and AFLPtechniques.

DNA markers can be used in genetic similarity and classification of cultivars. In this study, fourteen Iranian wheat cultivars were evaluated for genetic similarity using RAPD and AFLP techniques. Cluster analysis based on presence or absence of bandswas performed by Jacard's similarity coefficients. AFLP technique showed more polymorphic bands comparing with RAPD. The highest genetic similarity was for Azadi and Khazarl cultivars in both techniques. This investigation showed a high genetic similarity (0.684) among the used cultivars, therefore broadening the genetic base is suggested for breeding programs using these cultivars. By optimizing the molecular methods, it is possible to identify different germplasms, select genotypes for crosses and estimate heterosis at molecular level.
