Tricks of the trade: Tools for Successful Implementation of Programs Using Recycled Plastics

This paper presents a template for the successful implementation of programs directed at using recycled feedstocks in the manufacture of plastic products. The main topics include: identification of suitable material feedstreams, identification of potential applications, development of the product, development of the QA/QC plan, and implementation of the program. Successful implementation of the plan requires good knowledge of the price and availability of feedstocks, the advantages and limitations of recycled feedstocks, current QA/QC techniques, and the target market. Successful implementation of programs will generate increased awareness of the benefits of using recycled feedstocks, increasing the rate of growth seen by manufacturers of recycled plastics. The paper is clearly written from the compounder's perspective; however, the operational model can certainly be used by molders to ensure successful implementation of cost-savings programs. As the number of compounders using recycled feedstocks and the general supporting infrastructure increases, the focus of recycling companies has shifted from technology and equipment to the operational models needed to achieve successful programs. Installing an extruder and its auxiliary equipment to handle recycled feedstocks is no longer a challenge, while understanding the complex relationships between market perception, product development, quality and cost has become the key to successfully implementing programs using recyclates. This is certainly not a "one size fits all" program. The building blocks discussed can be re-organized or used in conjunction with other tools in order to successfully implement recycle programs. Almost all recycle programs have some unique issues that prevent rigorous implementation of any one particular strategy.
