The ReCyclotron was developed with the assistance of a Department of Energy NICE3 National Industrial Competitiveness through Energy Environment Economics - grant. The grant was awarded based on the potential of the ReCyclotron technology to be distributed to population centers to recover the high state plastic materials for reuse in new products. The energy savings come from the reuse of processed resins as well as the reduction of transportation energy expense to bring the materials to the landfills. A ReCyclotron takes about 100 KwH and 0.77 BtU to densify 1000 Kg of EPS. By volume, 1000 Kg of EPS is approximately one truck full. In Oregon, a hauler drives 170 miles to the landfill and returns empty. No trucks are filled entirely of foam but the trucks are filled by volume. We don ~1t have a waste audit for these shipments, we do have another metric to work with. Our demonstration facility supplies foam trays and cups to local businesses, The price of the supplies includes the cost of recycling them. The businesses are happy to pay the price because it costs them less to pay the recycling charge than it does to send the material to a landfill.
