This article reviews some of the literature on the response of ductile structures subjected to various dynamic loads which produce large inelastic strains. In particular, simple methods of analysis are examined as well as the influence of several factors on the overall characteristics of the behaviour for dynamic loadings and for repeated dynamic pressure pulses, which lead to the phenomenon of pseudo-shakedown. A review is presented of the theoretical procedures, which are being developed for predicting the threshold of inelastic failure under sufficiently severe dynamic loadings. Finally, some comments are offered on the influence of stress waves and dynamic material properties for structural crashworthiness applications and energy absorbing systems and on the laws for scaling up the results on small-scale models to predict the dynamic response of full-scale prototypes.
