A vertical direct chill (VDC) casting machine for production of magnesium extrusion billetand rolling slab was manufactured by o.d.t. Engineering supplied to CSIST (Chung-Shan Institute of Science & Technology). There are very few VDC casters for magnesium around the world and no standard technology. VDC technology for magnesium represented a new step for o.d.t. Engineering. Hatch & Associates was sub-contracted by o.d.t. Engineering, to design and specify the process. CAST assisted with training and commissioning. The technology for metal transfer and casting are described. Experiences during commissioning are related and the casting conditions used discussed. The capability to cast magnesium billet was demonstrated. Future work will concentrate on new mould designs. CSIST will use the caster to supply and demonstrate production of magnesium billet for extrusion into pipe for magnesium bicycles and rolling slab for production of sheet and strip for press forging into 3Cs applications.
