An Indonesian brown coal with alkaline earth metal cations was pyrolyzed at 10.C/min up to 1200.C with a fixed bed quartz reactor, and the following conclusions are summarized; 1. The Ca, Sr and Ba added except for Mg enhance remarkably the rate of N_2 formation at high temperatures of. 900.C. 2. The former three catalysts promote the formation of both crystallized carbon and CO. 3. The Ca, Sr and Ba catalyze the conversion of char-N to N_2 in the process of carbon crystallization.
