Change with time of the conversion of nascent char from Loy Yang brown coal by the steam gasification is well described by assuming that the nascent char consists of two components with much different reactivity with steam. The heating rate for the py-rolysis influences the overall rate of steam gasification of the nascent char by affecting the yields and first-order rate constants of the two components. The cooling of the nascent char and/or subsequent re-heating lowers the yield and rate constants of the more reactive component.
