The purpose of this paper is to introduce the oil country tubular NDT industry to EMAT based ultrasonics in a comparison to conventional ultrasonic inspection. Technology for the volumetric inspection of weld seams has been developed over the past 30 years using EMAT's (Electromagnetic acoustic transducers) where the ultrasonic waves are generated using electromagnetic forces rather than piezoelectric crystals. EMAT'S use electromagnetic forces comprising a magnet and an EMAT coil circuit. The simplest way to understand how EMAT's work is to compare it to conventional piezoelectric ultrasonic inspection.
